    Naples, July 28, 2015 -- Amongst olive and lemon trees of a rural farm in Acireale, teachers and students practiced their teaching and English skills during a novel two-week training camp in Sicily July 13-26 that was funded by the U.S. Mission to Italy.

    Naples, July 1, 2015 -- Consul General Colombia Barrosse celebrated in Naples the 239th anniversary of US Independence Day. Mayor of Naples Luigi De Magistris, Prefect of Naples Maria Gerarda Pantalone, President of the Molise Region Paolo Di Laura Frattura and President of the Basilicata Region Marcello Pittella were among the many guests who came from different areas of Southern Italy to attended the ceremony.

    Naples, June 9-10, 2015 -- American LGBT activist Stuart Milk saluted Naples as a place that embraces diversity during a visit to the region June 9-10. Milk, who is the nephew of slain San Francisco Councilman Harvey Milk and president of the foundation in his name, told a packed room at the Naples City Hall: "You are so fortunate to be living in a city with an inspirational mayor and citizens who are committed to inclusiveness."

    Naples, June 3-4, 2015 -- With a pair of well-sharpened knifes and a purse full of hot chilies, Chef Mary Sue Milliken took Naples by storm June 3-4, cooking with counterparts, headlining at a university symposium on the Mediterranean Diet, and demo-ing her "modern Mexican" cuisine at a celebrity cook off at the popular eatery Eccelenze Campania, which is a contributor to the USA Pavillion at Expo.

English, who serves as a State Department Sports Envoy, played six months for a Naples team following his stellar career with the Denver Nuggets and other North American teams.

    March 2015 -- On St. Patrick's Day in March, CG Barrosse used the struggles faced by early Irish immigrants to underscore to the audience of 400 Campania high school students, LGBT activists and new immigrants, that it is possible to stamp out racism in our societies.

    Naples, March 2015 -- Consul Deborah Guido-O’Grady praised exchanges at the recent Naples commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of the American Field Service (AFS), which began in WWI as an American volunteer ambulance corps and grew to a global network for "Intercultura" high school exchanges.

    Lecce, March 2015 -- Just outside the City of Lecce lies an old masseria (farmhouse traditional to Puglia) that has been recently renovated and now houses the Integra Association. Headed by Dr. Klodiana Çuka, who emigrated to Italy many years ago from Albania, the Association provides housing, skills training, Italian classes and hope to immigrants in Puglia.

    Bari, March 3, 2015 -- On March 3, University of Bari students and faculty turned out in record numbers to hear both Ambassador Phillips and Ms. Linda Douglass on the evolving realities of freedom expression in a changing world. Speaking to some 200 people gathered at the University’s Department of Law, Ambassador Phillips reflected on the recent attacks in Paris and Copenhagen, focused on how democracies are standing up to defend free speech, and outlined ways that young professionals can show leadership on these compelling issues.

    Trani, March 3, 2015 -- On March 2, the Ambassador gave closing remarks on religious freedom at the inauguration of the newly renovated Scolanova Synagogue in Trani. The 900-year old synagogue, which had been turned into a church in the 1300s, was returned to the local Jewish community in 2006, when structural renovations commenced.

    San Vito Lo Capo, September 27, 2014 - With a dash of red hot Louisiana spice and hand rolled semolina grains, inspired by the American “Jambalaya”, U.S. Diplomatic Chef Corps Maziar Farivar challenged nine other countries for the winning dish at the annual Cous Cous Festival which took place in San Vito Lo Capo, in Sicily, from 24 to 26 September.

In Sant’Agata dei Goti, a small town north of Naples, a crowd of 3,500 gathered to welcome back this favorite son and cheer his new status as the town's honorary citizen.

The ceremony was organized by Gela Mayor Angelo Fasulo, and included official remarks at the historic Gela Town Hall as well as two wreath-laying ceremonies, one for the Italian soldiers and another for American soldiers.
